What North Vancouver is Doing to Help?
Currently, there are a lot of environmental concerns surrounding plastic, but luckily, North Vancouver is here to help.
North Vancouver is a green city; however, it wasn’t always this green. In 2007 there were no green bins, and organics were not banned from landfills. In 2008, we threw away 500,000 tons of waste into the landfill. In 2015, we had green bins, and organics were banned from the landfill, and we threw away 350,000 tons of waste into landfills (27% less than 500,000). In 2020, we hope to reduce the 2008 number by 50%, so we hope to throw away only 250,000 tons of waste into the landfill.
Green bins are also known as organic bins used to deposit yard trimmings and food scraps. If every resident in North Vancouver recycled food scraps for a whole year, we would remove 5,500 trucks worth of food scraps from the landfill.
You may ask: What do people do with their food scraps?
Some compost in the backyard, or throw scraps in the green bin.
The green bin is getting much more relevant since the organics were banned from the landfill in North Vancouver in 2015, as we are forced to take action.
Unfortunately, the green bin is making recycling more complicating because we don’t know if the right things go in there, or we may not have the space to keep decomposing food waste.
Remember, North Vancouver may look like a very good environment, and it is, but if you aren’t careful enough about throwing waste and recycling where it doesn’t belong, the world will be engulfed by landfills.

Waste Control Services is a Solution to Help Recycle
in North Vancouver
In North Vancouver there is an abundance of plastic waste. While we are lucky that we have a curb side pickup for hard plastic glass, and paper, we do not have a quick and easy way to dispose of soft plastic.
As a result, many people throw their soft plastic into the wastebasket.
Luckily there is another way, though somewhat unknown service that we can use: the North Vancouver Waste Control Services.
At the Waste Control Services there are many receptacles for the many varieties of otherwise unrecyclable materials: soft plastics, styrofoam food trays, laminates, rigid plastics, and batteries.
At the Waste Control Services space, the items are separate: All the plastic gets washed, sorted and ground into small particles. About 90% of the plastics are sold to North America companies to make brand new plastic products.
Depending on what type of plastic it is, the recycled plastic will be used to make carpets, sleeping bags, ski jackets and water bottles. Very small unwanted particles are removed using elutriation. Elutriation is a process for particles based on their size, shape and density, using a stream of gas or liquid flowing in a direction.
Please get more informed about the services provided at The Waste Control Center as it is a great way to recycle in North Vancouver when the curbside pickup is not sufficient.
